Studying in Italian or in English?
The first question is simple: which language will you study in? Around 90% of bachelor degrees are taught only in Italian. Master programmes can be offered in Italian, English, or both depending on the university.
Want to study in English?
In most cases, a B2 level is requested, with a language certificate such as TOEFL or IELTS. Some universities accept B1, while others may run an interview to assess your level.
Want to study in Italian?
You usually need at least B2, with a recognised certificate such as CILS, CELI, PLIDA or CERT.IT. Some universities now accept the online CISIA ITA L2 test or organise an internal test, for example Roma Tre.
For future master students, several universities also request B1 or B2 in English. In some cases, proof of an EU language such as French at B2 level can be enough.
